Thinking Critically.

No, you are not right 100% of the time. And you don’t know everything!! It is important that we keep an open mind and think critically when in business.

I love science because it deals in fact, scientifically proven theories, investigations into case studies, all that good real stuff that can demonstrate the accuracy of the theory. What I don’t like is the amount of BS that is floating around being touted as fact, but is, in fact, untested opinion. I was at a presentation recently that stated 40% of people at a presentation would believe anything the presenter said because they were in a position of authority. Now I have not investigated this theory further but I have investigated how we trust those that we think are an authority so it would not surprise me if this was true because there have already been a number of scientific studies done in this area that would back up this claim.

Facebook is a perfect example of where false claims can become viral in no time, and “Fake News” travels fast. In fact, we have a sarcastic saying in our house, “if it was on Facebook it must be true!!”. is a great site that investigates viral news and finds out if it is true or false, and has become a trusted resource to many. I never repost anything now on Facebook unless I have done some critical evaluation as to the source and checked that it is from a credible source. Critical evaluation and critical thinking is a valuable skill to have when it comes to business.

If you are planning to move in any direction in your business, doing your research with an open mind free of opinion and prejudice and emotion is important. You need to look at all angles before you make a decision, particularly one that can cost you in time, money or stress.
Don’t get stuck in the research phase or you will never move forward. At some stage, you have to make a decision. You will know how much of a risk you are prepared to take and what that decision will be.
